The Science Behind Motor Speed Control

The fundamental relationship between motor speed and electrical frequency forms the basis of VFD operation. For AC motors, synchronous speed (Ns) follows this essential formula:

Ns = (120 × f) ÷ p

Where:
f = power supply frequency (measured in Hertz)
p = motor pole pairs

Actual rotational speed (Nr) typically measures slightly below synchronous speed due to inherent motor slip. This slip (s), expressed as a percentage, modifies the calculation:

Nr = Ns × (1 - s)

Practical Speed Adjustment

VFDs manipulate output frequency to control synchronous speed, which in turn governs actual motor rotation. Consider a 4-pole motor (p=2) operating at standard 50Hz power: its synchronous speed calculates to 1500 RPM. When a VFD reduces frequency to 25Hz, synchronous speed drops proportionally to 750 RPM, with actual speed slightly less due to slip.
